Dr. Lytton Smith, MD, 1946-2018
Former Chief of Staff at both St. Jude

Dr. Lytton W. Smith, MD

June 11, 1946 - February 18, 2018

Dr. Lytton W. Smith passed away at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, CA. Lytton was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to William H. and Daisy Smith. He spent his formative years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was a ROTC candidate in the Canadian Navy before entering and graduating from the University of Manitoba Medical School with honors in 1970. He did his internship at USC Medical Hospital in Los Angeles, CA before returning to Vancouver, BC in 1971, and then joined the Prospect Group in Yorba Linda in 1974, where he became a family practice and geriatric specialist.

He served as Chief of Staff at both St. Jude and Placentia Linda Hospitals. He is a past president of the Orange County Medical Association, along with being very active in both the California Medical Association as well as the American Medical Association.

He was the physician of record for several local assisted living facilities for many years. He also served as a primary member of the California Hospital Survey team, visiting various hospitals throughout the state to assure the highest standards of patient care.

Early on Lytton was inspired by the legendary stories of Dr. Tom Dooley and Dr. Jonas Salk. Then, his experience with the professional and bedside manner of a caring Dr. McDonald, who made a house call to see Lytton, diagnosed his tonsillitis and then performed the surgery, convinced Lytton to become a doctor.

Lytton was a hands-on doctor; not only was he a great clinician but he performed and assisted in many surgeries, and for the past few years, including nights and weekends, assisted in Section C operations at St. Jude.

He "listened" to his patients; always interested to know how they were feeling and what was going on in their personal and professional life. He "knew" and "cared" for his patients. He treated each patient as a friend. They were not just a name on a chart. He had many multi-generational patients – early on patients that were now grandparents, to whom he had delivered and counseled their children and now he attended their grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his loving and supportive wife of almost 49 years, Donna Smith, who passed away in May of 2017. He is survived by his brother Wayne and wife Merrie Smith, brothers-in-law Roy and Ken Huzel, sisters-in-law Louise and Marlene Huzel, nieces April Provencher, Traci Smith and Trisha Huzel.

Special thanks to Dr. Kenneth Tan and Dr. Joanna Tan for their personal attention and professional care; to Norma Ament Simmons, his RN for over 35 years, and to the many patients and colleagues for their kind thoughts and prayers.

A memorial service is planned for staff, friends and family at the St. Jude Heritage Medical Group facility in Yorba Linda, CA in March. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in the name of Lytton and Donna Smith to St. Jude Medical Center or the American Cancer Society. McAulay & Wallace Mortuary
