Mrs. Gowen is surely one of the last citrus growers.
Constance E. Gowen, March 13, 1921 - March 23, 2010:

Connie Gowen, 89, long-time resident of Fullerton, was called home to be with her Lord. She passed away in Beverly, Massachusetts, where she had lived for the last 7 years. The family is so grateful to the wonderful staff of Ledgewood Rehabilitation for their loving and compassionate care.

Connie was born in Battle Creek, MI as the youngest of 11 children of George and Ida May Sisco. Her family moved to Long Beach when she was quite young; she then attended high school and college at John Brown University, Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where she met her future husband, and returned to California in 1941, settling in Fullerton where she was legal secretary until her marriage.

She and her husband were cattle and citrus ranchers in Fullerton and in Yuma, AZ. Her organizational and leadership skills were put to good use during her years of service to the community and her church. Her indefatigable good nature and sense of adventure carried over into all aspects of her life.

She learned to ski after she turned 60 and loved planning winter vacations for her family. She travelled with church friends to China, Africa, Europe and New England. She has remained close to her college roommate Jo Sweet, a frequent travelling companion. She met acquaintences and adopted them into "family".

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas K. Gowen ("TK"), former mayor of Fullerton, and her beloved son Tom, Junior. She is survived by her daughter and "son-in-love," Nancy and Garry Keil of Lynn, MA, and her "daughter-in-love," Kae Gowen and grandchildren (of whom she was so proud) Leanne and Brett Gowen of Stockton and Sacramento; as well as by nieces Sandra Firl, Joyce Hassing and Betty Berney and nephew Dan Talbot and their families.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, April 1st at 1:00 p.m. at First Evangelical Free Church, 2801 Brea Blvd, Fulerton, CA 92835. In lieu of flowers, the family respectully suggests donations to the scholarship fund at John Brown University, 2000 West University Street, Siloam Springs, AR 72761 or to a charity of your choice.
