Paul Codispoti, Pizza Man
He really built a great business, isn't he? We just about all went to Giovanni's, and loved it.

I know a lot of our friends from SHHS and elsewhere worked at Giovanni's on Williamson Way. The only one I can remember right now, though, is Vinny Tulumelo, '66.

That location is still open and doing good business, and has expanded to include what was formerly Baker's Drugstore next door on the west. The Giovanni's in North Harbor near Imperial in Fullerton (or maybe La Habra) is still open, too.  For quite a while there was also a Giovanni's at the southeast corner of State College & East Chapman, too.

Nothing could beat the cozy little Giovanni's of the late 1950s and 1960s, though, where you were almost sure to see some friends.

Not many Fullerton businesses from that era have lasted to the present day. Aside from some supermarkets, some that have are:

Bill's Body Shop on South Highland, across from Freek's Garage.

Freek's Garage is still open, although open, although owner Dan Barron, '67 retired maybe 10 year ago.

The Sunny Hills Union 76 Station and Car Wash is still open, and greatly expanded, at Bastanchury & North harbor, southwest corner.

The Cellar Restaurant is still open at North Harbor & Wilshire.

Comstock Plumbing is still operating, with an office on Commonwealth near North Richman.

McCoy & Mills Ford and Renick Cadillac. All the other great new car dealerships are gone, I believe.

Whenever '60s Sunny Hills High School people talk about local places they miss from our childhood to young adult years, they mention, in no particular order:

1. Ranchtown and Model Market, with Jimmy Smith's Swim Center and the Barn.

2. The Turntable Record Shop, at North Spadra/Harbor & Union, west side of the street.

3. La Chiquita Mexican Food in an old house on Valencia, just east of Harbor, north side of the street.

4. McDonald's on South Nicholas/Euclid and Orangethorpe, with Nick's Liquor, Prather's Barber Shop and Winchell's Donuts, all nearby. Gone as of 5 or so years ago, all of it.

5. Fox Fullerton and Wilshire Theater, and the romantic Anaheim Drive-In, with chic Americana trattoria

6. Foster's Sand and Gravel, South Nicholas/Euclid, maybe across border in Anaheim. [Just kidding, although it is long gone, sad to say.]
