Each one of us has 10,000 memories of that main breezeway, at least. Not every memory has a beginning, middle and end like a sequence in a movie. Most of your memories are sights, sounds, feelings, thoughts, impressions. Brain scientists tell us everything we ever sensed or thought or did is in permanent brain storage and we never lose any. We may lose our connection to some memories, maybe from neglect, not thinking of them, or even dementia. Many memories can be regained.
Almost all of us spent 7 hours a day at Sunny Hills High School,5 days a week,  for 4 weeks a month, 9 months a year. You probably walked on the breezeway 6 or 8 times a day, maybe 20 times, at least once or twice. Walked across it, walked nearby, looked over at it.
Were you walking on the breezeway when you heard President Kennedy had been shot? Later when his death was announced?
When you saw Connie Lang or Shelly Pulver in a beautiful dress?
The first time you saw Tommy Pizula or Matt Hacker  and realized how handsome they were?
When Coach Carhart hurried by and amazed you at how tall he was?
When 2 guys pushed each other and it seemed like there might be a fight?
When you saw a well known girl crying and you wondered why?
When you first heard a boy play “Wipeout” by banging his hands on a locker?
When Mr. Robertson walked past fast with a frown and you wondered what the problem was.
When you saw a new couple holding hands for the first time?
When you heard the crash of a student’s car hitting Mr. Smith in his car?
When it was 3:02 PM Friday and all you wanted was your sweater from your breezeway looker so you could cut out for the beach with your friends?
That’s why Sunny Hills High School is part of you for as long as you live. If that bothers you or is hurtful, you can learn to remember it without pain, too.
