Have you ever loved someone with all your heart and soul, yet that person scarcely even recognized your existence, let alone returned your affection?
Or have you loved someone passionately, and the other person simply did not love you? Of course you have. It's a nearly universal human experience, and the subject of innumerable songs and other works of art, Your experience could have ranged from suffering a deep affection you felt for someone at Sunny Hills -- someone who didn't feel the same about you -- all the way to a tragic love you had (or may still have) for another person, taking decades. There are no statistics for these experiences -- it sounds silly to say -- but clearly girls and woman are far more likely to admit to them, to describe them, and to talk about them than boys and men. Yet boys and men feel these passions jus as often and I'm here to tell you so. Many is the man who was broken by losing a loving romance: broken!
These are two great novels are about that experience, The better of them, OF HUMAN BONDAGE, is exactly what the title suggests. This is the love a man feels for a woman, an obsessive love that torments him for a lifetime, and she doesn't love him at all, and to the contrary, although she uses him for decades. Why does anyone hold a destructive, punishing love like hat? This is not the place to discuss why an' how.
Nor is this a time to consider the widespread notion that romantic love (Western love) is a swindle, a fool's errand, a sickness, a worthless use of time, (The HELL you say!) And the belief that marriage is an obsolete custom, a Medieval enslavement.
And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.
And friends, classmates, if thou hast wed to thee the one you love, the love of your life, the one you weather'd storms and droughts with, the one you travel hand-in- hand with through the Valley of Darkness and the Slough of Despond to emerge finally in the peace and content of sacred companionship, count yourself fortunate beyond all gold and rubies, beyond the hillside Newport Beach properties with their glimmering infinity pools, beyond even 100,000 shares of Microsoft long and far away, for you are blest.
