He was always right there, keeping time, enhancing Jagger and Richard, adding what every song needed, just right. He was the consummate professional, as much as anyone in music. He played like an adult, without tiresome theatrics or obnoxious arrogance. Charlie Watts was a musician.
Many of you saw him play many times. Wish I had. If you could do your job as well as Charlie did his, night after night after night, you were brilliant and then some. In such a flamboyant band, he gave the music and every performance balance, and quiet steadiness. No small task.
I don't think we knew how ill he'd been. Goodbye, Charlie. Goodbye, mate. Thanks for all the terrific music.
