Dirk H. Hacker, born October 24, 1954, in Orange, California, to Connie Anita Kaylor and Harold Henry Hacker, passed away fighting cancer on August 7, 2012, in Draper, Utah, at the home of his brother Patrick Kilbourne.
Dirk grew up in Fullerton, California. He attended schools in California and Utah and graduated from Edgewood High, CA. He served a two-year mission in Perth, Australia, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent most of his career—from 1979 to 1995—as a firefighter, paramedic, and cross-trained police officer for Orem City. He loved the life and brotherhood of being a fireman and paramedic. On his off days, he worked in the safety department of Geneva Steel. After his retirement from Orem City, he became responsible for the safety and security operations at Geneva through a company he started and owned. A few years after Geneva closed, Dirk began work in the safety department of U.S. Synthetics. He enjoyed his work at U.S. Synthetics and loved his co-workers. Outside of work, Dirk spent his time attending the temple, golfing, traveling, and riding his Harley. He loved golfing with friends and, in particular, with his brother Mike.
While Dirk did not have children of his own, he was a great family man. He was a caring and considerate son, brother, and uncle. He had a special love for his former wife Shelly, her four children, and their grandchildren. He loved being a grandpa. We are all better for having known and spent time with Dirk.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Connie Anita Kilbourne and Harold Henry Hacker, and by his brothers Mathew James Hacker, Frank Lamarr Hacker (Gisela of Kingwood, TX), and Nathan Hacker (Katrina of St. George).
He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Michael Hacker (Ilene) of St George; Susan Schow (Craig) of Pleasant Grove; Connie Heggem (Dennis) of Springville; Kathleen Thomson of Orem; Colleen Thomas (Thane) of Cordova, AK; Cynthia Wilkes (Aaron) of Columbus, GA; Paul Stauffer of SLC; Patrick Kilbourne (Melanie) of Draper; Alex Hacker (Jill) of Naples, FL; Adam Hacker (Tiffany) of Layton; and Ethan Hacker of SLC. He is also survived by Shelly Gottfredson of Riverton; Joni Hackney (Jason) of Henderson, NV; Dani Reneau (Rich) of Portland, OR; Marci Jolley (Sam) of Florence, AZ; Jake Gottfredson of Washington, DC; and eight grandchildren: Davis, Curtis, Lucas, Sailor, Olivia, Preslie, Cash, and Isabell.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Shelly Gottfredson and Melanie Kilbourne for their untiring devotion in caring for Dirk through these last months.
