Dr. James Larson MD 1932-2022

It is with great sadness we announce the death of our father, James A. Larson on February 12, 2022. He was born in Eau Claire, WI in 1932. He moved with his family to Anaheim, CA in 1936, where his father, John, began his career as a General Practitioner.

After graduating from St. Anthony High School in Long Beach, he entered Marquette University, where he met his beloved, Joan Fotsch. He had gone on to Medical School at Marquette University, and they were married after his second year in 1956. After graduating in 1958, James spent the next 7 years as a medical officer in the Navy, taking speciality training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Oakland Naval Hospital. The last 3 years of his training were spent at the Marine Corps Base, Twenty Nine Palms, CA.

He started his medical practice in Fullerton in 1965 and retired in 1993. Dr. Larson had a successful career delivering countless babies and kindheartedly caring for new mothers as well as women of the surrounding community with the utmost care.

Jim was a devoted husband, wonderful father, and exceptional grandfather and great-grandfather. He held special, long-lasting friendships and is remembered for his generosity and his natural ability to make friends everywhere he went.

He was predeceased in death by his precious wife Joan of 64 years. He is survived by his sister, Imogene Prager of St. Helena, CA. James also leaves behind his five children: Kimberly Curtis (Derek); Kathie McCoy (Bob); Jamie Flynn (Bob); Jim Larson (Valerie); John Larson (Amy); 12 grandchildren (who fondly called him "Papa"); and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are to be held at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Anaheim, Thursday, March 3rd at 10am, with the burial to be at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange.

I KNEW OF DR. LARSON BY REPUTATION ONLY,  AS MANY WOMEN I MET AT WORK AND SOCIALLY IN FULLERTON BETWEEN 1965 AND 1980 WERE HIS PATIENTS. THEY ALL SEEMED TO LIKE HIM, AND CONSIDERED HIM A KIND, FRIENDLY DOCTOR, AS WELL AS A BIG, HANDSOME MAN. EVEN OTHER DOCTORS SAID THAT, AND MORE THAN ONCE WOMEN SAID HE LOOKED LIKE ACTOR CHAD EVERETT, STAR OF “MEDICAL CENTER” ON ABC-TV.  DR. LARSON WAS ONE OF A HANDFUL OF LEADING OB/GYNS IN THE NORTH ORANGE COUNTY AREA. I IMAGINE MANY ‘60S LANCER MOMS AND WOMAN CLASSMATES WERE HIS PATIENTS.
IT'S WONDERFUL WHEN A COMMUNITY HAS A PHYSICIAN THEY LOVE AND ADMIRE, AND CONSIDER A VITAL MEMBER OF THEIR COMMUNITY. IN DAYS PAST THERE WERE QUITE A FEW DOCTORS AND SURGEONS LIKE THAT IN SUNNY HILLS AND FULLERTON, BUT MEDICINE HAS CHANGED SINCE THEN, STRUCTURALLY, ECONOMICALLY AND PERSONALLY. WE OFTEN HARDLY KNOW OUR DOCTORS AT ALL, AND ONLY SEE THEM FOR FEW MINUTES, WHILE NURSE PRACTITIONERS, REGISTERED NURSES, TECHNICIANS AND EVEN MACHINES  ASSUME SO MUCH OF WHAT WAS TRADITIONALLY THE DOCTOR'S ROLE. IN THAT LONG AGO  ERA IN SUNNY HILLS AND FULLERTON, MOST PATIENTS THOUGHT OF DR. LARSON, DR, MINTER, DR. LOWE, DR. BISHOP, DR. CARNAHAN, DR. MONGEON, DR.SCHEIDT, DR. OVANDO, DR. SPENCER, DR. GRIFFITH, DR.CLOPTON, DR.ZEILINGA, DR. RYEL AND OTHERS AS WARM PERSON FRIENDS. THAT BOND OF TRUST WAS VITAL  AND IMPORTANT.  THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES WILL REMEMBER DR. JIM LARSON FONDLY.
