Ever eat at The Pantry? The Original Pantry at 877 S Figueroa Street in Downtown LA, open 24/7 since 1924, their doors have never closed?
Not far from USC, police ate there, everybody went. Not a greasy spoon in any way, nice and clean, but some of their food was, yes, greasy. All meat all the time. Did you go? Did you eat a steak at 3 AM at The Original Pantry?

A great joint. Went there with my folks beginning in the late 50's. Went there regularly when I was going to Loyola of Los Angeles School of Law. Early on, there was a pay phone on the wall back to the right as you entered the place. The wall was covered with phone numbers -- probably mostly hookers and bookies. As I said--a great joint! It's been cleaned up in the passing years. I think Dick Riordan (former L.A. mayor) still owns it. Is Riordan still alive? I'm not sure.
