Unfortunately, the ongoing volcanic eruption in Hawaii has taken Gary's house, workshed, tools, surfboards, etc. There is a Go Fund Me page if fellow Lancers would like to help Gary out.

In my opinion, Gary Young is the most innovative surfboard builder of all time. Bob Simons brought the world foam & fiberglass surf boards in the the 1950's. Gary has used his creative mind & craftsmanship hands to the creation of surfboards, body boards, wind surfing boards, canoes, & many other objects that can be made with modern ('74 -today) Composites technologies. [NASA caught on many many years latter] I have made or had Gary make every board I have owned. I still have 8 of his innovative boards built '74-'98. I personally helped with all but the last boards he made for me.

Gary has been living in Hawaii since @ least 1984. He has been building surfboards with ever more technologically advances techniques of Composites. You can view his profile @

His home was in the Kapoho Beach Estates. Around June 6th the Kilauea East Rift zone Flow engulfed his home & work shop.

Today a picture of the area were Gary's Home was was posted by the USGS @

I haven't heard from Gary in many many years. I hope he recovering from his loss.
