Standing on the pier with an Abba Zabba

Leaning on the railing with a Delaware Punch
My fresh sunburn is starting to hurt
I notice girls in pedal pushers or bathing suits
I have an interest
I didn't have last year
I'll be eleven soon!
The surfers down below
With streaks of blond
In their hair, they bob
And sink on their shiny boards
Patient as they wait,
Share wisecracks, dirty jokes
Suddenly there's action
Guys shoot the pier
Where they could get scraped
To pulp by barnacles!
Old men who fish
And smoke Pall Malls
Pay no attention,
Couples smitten
Hold hands to stroll,
Tiny life guards distant
In bright red trunks
Stand in the towers below
RESCUE! A woman
Drowning saved!
A crowd gathers, disperses --
Then a teen-aged girl shrieks
When her boyfriend picks her up
Off her towel to carry her
Into the water
He stops at the shore,
They laugh: "So bitchin'!"
Their friends say!
Me, I'm a 5th grader
From Richman Elementary School
It's Sunday
Mom will watch "Perry Mason"
With her girlfriend tonight
(He never loses a case)
We might have
Chicken pot pies
Or salty spaghetti
From Giovanni's --
Tomorrow at 7:30 AM I'll walk
West on Valencia
Then past Christy Fox
Down past
Dennis Challman's house
Mrs. Olga Piirto
Is my teacher
She saw Babe Ruth play
Many times, and
If I daydream
I'll see girls in pedal pushers,
Bathing suits, like
Jeannie Skinner,
Terry Messick, Kathy Burke
Next door to my best friend
Jeff Nix on Hill Street
Right by Nicolas Junior High,
Or Donna Baker, Stanna Beasley --
This neighborhood is
Crawlin' with cute girls!
O Lord, what's the deal
With them?
Could you actually
Ride with one
Like Ronnie Apgar
In his twitchin' '49 Ford?
My goodness!
Better stick with Sandy Koufax,
Don Drysdale, Frank Howard
And Willie Davis
For the moment!
I'm not even at Nicolas yet!
