Sorry to hear of Coach Carhart’s passing. Coach molded together a really good team in the 1965 season and through hard work we made it to CIF. I’ll never forget the 1964 summer league water polo games we played ist the Olympic pool next to the LA coliseum. One evening game was called and police and Coach evacuated us from the pool because the Watts riots had just started. Lots of crazy times and good memories with teammates.

Thanks for all info on Pete. Yes, Vern we did pretty good under him and both Mark Smitt and I had the experience working with him as lifeguards at Yorba Linda County Club for a few summers. Mark and I have lots of good memories working for/with him. Plus, I was only 15 1/2 the first summer I worked with him. Am sorry he passed at an early age.

I WAS AT THE NCAA SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS AT DARTMOUTH IN 1968 AND RAN INTO COACH CARHART.  HE WAS UP THE STANDS SO I WENT UP AND TALKED TO HIM FOR A BIT. HE TOLD ME HE WAS COACHING AT CORNELL. HE COACHED THERE FOR 4 OR 5 YEARS.... 66-67 THRU 70-71. I WAS SADDENED TO SEE HE HAD PASSED AWAY.....25 YEARS AGO AND AT A RELATIVELY YOUNG AGE. I GIVE HIM ALL THE CREDIT FOR STARTING SUNNY HILLS ON THE PATHWAY TO BECOMING THE "POWERHOUSE" IT BECAME IN BOTH WATER POLO & SWIMMING.

COACH CARHART REPLACED CECIL CROW AS OUR HEAD COACH 1963.  THE GUYS REALLY RESPECTED AND ADMIRED HIM.  HE WAS A REALLY GOOD COACH, AND CARED FOR ALL OF US VERY CLEARLY.  I SEEM TO REMEMBER ONE OF HIS ENCOURAGEMENTS, “SWIM  UNTIL IT HURTS!”  …. AND WE SURE DID!

SHHS WAS TRULY A STEPPING STONE IN HIS CAREER AS HE GOT RECRUITED BY CORNELL OFF THE BACK OF HIS SUCCESS WITH OUR AQUATIC TEAMS AT SHHS.  WE WERE THE FIRST TEAM FROM SHHS TO MAKE THE CIF FINALS IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY…. IT IS A PRETTY DISTANT MEMORY.

HE WAS ALSO AFFILIATED WITH THE YORBA LINDA COUNTRY CLUB AND DURING THE SUMMER VACATIONS HE RECRUITED SEVERAL OF US TO PARTICIPATE IN COMPETITIONS WITH OTHER SWIMMING CLUBS OUTSIDE OF ACADEMIA.  WE WERE PRETTY GOOD I SEEM TO REMEMBER. TRYING TO THINK BACK TO THE WHO I REMEMBER THAT MIKE BLAND, MARK SCHMITT, AND JOHN NEELEMAN, ’64, SEVERAL OTHERS WERE INVOLVED WITH THAT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY.  I THINK THERE WERE ABOUT 10 OF US.

I TRIED TO TRACK PETE DOWN ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO WITH NO SUCCESS, AND PERIODICALLY HAVE TRIED TO LOOK HIM UP ON THE WEB, AND YOUR POSTING GOT ME LOOKING AGAIN, TO OUR MUTUAL DISAPPOINTMENT IN OPPORTUNITIES LOST. [VERN MEANS BY THE TIME WE FOUND OUT ABOUT COACH CARHART, HE’D ALREADY DIED - ED.]

NOTE: I ENTERED VERN’S COMMENTS WITH HSI PERMISSION, AND USED UPPER CASE TO MAKE IT READABLE FOR BOOMER EYES. - PAUL SAEVIG, ‘67
