Mr. Phil Halverson, 1929-2017
Phil Halverson
McMinnville, Oregon
April 3, 1929 - August 28, 2017
Phil Halverson passed away on August 28, 2017, at the age of 88, from the complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Raised in Los Angeles, where he was born on April 3, 1929, he was the son of Carl and Thea (Sondreal) Halverson. Phil met his wife, Beverly Brighouse, in college and they married after his graduation from Caltech as an electrical engineer; he then began his career with General Electric, later joining the Navy as an electronics officer. Phil and his family relocated to Fullerton, California in 1958, where he worked for Beckman Instruments for several years before joining Preston Scientific, as Executive Vice President and where he had a long successful career primarily designing high speed test equipment. During that time he also earned his Masters Degree in computer science at Cal State, Fullerton. He retired from Preston Scientific after 42 years and moved to McMinnville in 2005 to be closer to his three daughters and several grandchildren. Over the years Phil had a number of hobbies, primarily working on and running his steam train at the Orange County Model Engineers in Costa Mesa. He was also involved in wood working, wine making and jewelry making. Phil and his family did a lot of camping throughout the West, and after retirement traveled to Europe, frequently visiting the Norwegian and Swedish homes of his parents where he had cousins. A devoted and loving family man, Phil is survived by Beverly, his beloved wife of 66 years and four children: Susan Warner of Vancouver, WA, Lani (Mark) Kirby of Dallas, OR, David (Denise) Halverson of Huntington Beach, CA, Cheryl Davis of Tigard, OR and 12 grandchildren. He was adored by his family and friends. A celebration of Phil’s life for family and friends will be held in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
