Mrs. Betty Sue  Lancaster, 1927-2021
Mrs. Lancaster taught French at SHHS from Fall 1966 to 1985.

 

Mrs. Betty Sue Tilley Lancaster, 93, of The Gardens of Taylor Glen Baptist Retirement Home, Concord, NC, passed on to her heavenly home on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Taylor Glen's Healthcare Facility after a brief hospitalization. 
 
 
Born November 14, 1927 in Fuquay-Varina, NC, she was the daughter of the late B.C. and Willa Ferrell Tilley. Betty graduated from Fuquay-Varina High School in 1944. She earned a BA from Woman's College UNC-Greensboro in 1948 and a MA from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1950. 
 
She married Robert W. "Bob" Lancaster of Castalia, NC in 1951 and moved to Boone where she began her teaching career. She was a high school Foreign Language teacher, principally French, for 35 years. She taught in Boone, Myers Park High School and E. Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte.
 
After she and Bob moved their family to California in 1966, she taught at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton for 19 years. She loved teaching and was active in numerous educational organizations. 
 
After retirement, she and Bob retired to Lake Norman in Mooresville, NC, then later moved to Concord, NC. Betty was an active member of Baptist churches her entire life. She has been a member at Berea Baptist Church, Mooresville since 1986, where she faithfully served in various capacities. 
 
She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. Betty was an avid reader, writer, and journaled daily. She had an amazing memory and recall, and loved being the family historian.
 
She enjoyed nurturing friendships, and had many hobbies such as crafts, needlework, community involvement, and traveling. 
In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, D. Ronald Tilley; and oldest daughter, Ellen Lancaster. 
 
She is survived by her children, Susan Lancaster Gray and husband, Stuart of Danville, CA, Russ Lancaster and wife, Carol of Orange, CA, and Robert Lancaster, Jr. and wife, Renee of Yorba Linda, CA; grandchildren, David, Rebecca, and Hannah Lancaster, Jeffrey and Robert Gray, Megan and Andrew Lancaster all of CA; sister-in-law, Anne Tilley of Durham, NC; nephews, David Tilley and Christopher Drozd; and nieces, Connie Ingram and Linda Lancaster.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 26 from 1:00-2:00 PM with a service following at 2:00 PM at Berea Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph Sparrow officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. 
 
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Berea Baptist Church Building Fund, 1015 River Hwy, Mooresville, NC 28117 or Hooks and Needles at Gardens of Taylor Glen, 3700 Taylor Glen Lane NW, Concord, NC 28027.

Mrs Lancaster taught me French 3 and 4…after Mrs. Root. Mrs. Lancaster spoke English with a Southern accent, but French like a native. ???? Because of these women I went on to minor in French at university and study for a year at the Universite de Bordeaux in France.
