Mrs, Joyce Sullivan, 1927-2022
As a Fullerton native born in 1927, Mrs. Sullivan must have known dozens of our parents through school, church, clubs, the library and elsewhere
JOYCE SULLIVAN OBITUARY
February 6, 1927 - December 18, 2022 Our beautiful and beloved mother, Joyce Irene (MacClocklin) Sullivan, passed away on December 18 in Placentia, CA at the age of 95. Born in Fullerton, CA, she lived in her birth home on Wilshire Avenue with her parents, Jesse and Nila MacClocklin, until her marriage. Mom met our father, Kenneth C. Sullivan, the day before Pearl Harbor at a Fullerton Union High School holiday party, and the war would inform the early years of their relationship. Dad served in the Army and was in Europe where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the second wave at Normandy. Mom was home in school and she also worked a variety of jobs supporting the war effort, always answering the call for help. Along with her studies, she played tennis, loved the beach and spent many fun times at Bal Week over the years with her friends. When Dad returned from the war, they married and spent the next decades together until his passing in 2008. During their marriage, they liked to travel, entertain and took many trips over the years. After having her two children (Pete and Nancy), Mom returned to college at the newly formed Orange County State College (later to become CSU Fullerton) where she earned her teaching credential. She then taught English and served as counselor to students at Washington Junior High School in La Habra for over 25 years. Mom loved books and reading, and following her retirement, she became an active and integral part of the Friends of the Fullerton Library, helping to found the library bookstore and working tirelessly at many book sales over the years. Joyce is survived by her two children, Peter Michael Sullivan (Nancy Lynn), and Nancy Kay Boyd; her three grandchildren, Daniel Sullivan, Kelley Sullivan and Jesse Boyd (Ashley); 5 great grandchildren, Jacob Sullivan, Ryan Callison, Ciera Rae Sullivan, Eryn Sullivan, and Xavier James Boyd; and 7 great great grandchildren. Mom was always amazed that her small family had grown to such a large extended one! Mom was an inspiration to so many for her strength and resilience, her kindness and always joyful smile. We are grateful to have had her present with us for 95 amazing years and know that she and Dad are reunited and will be forever in our hearts. A celebration of Joyce's life is pending.
