FULLERTON The police and City Hall communities today are mourning the death of retired Sgt. Glenn Deveney, who died Friday after a long battle with cancer. He was 64.

Deveney retired 10 years ago after 32 years with the Police Department, where he worked every detail.

Affectionately called "Sgt. Motor Mouth" by his co-workers, Deveney was an imposing figure at more than 6 feet tall with white hair. He loved nothing more than stopping on the street or in the office to greet and chat.

"If he met you on the sidewalk, the conversation would be interrupted continually by passersby shouting 'Hi Dev' or 'Hi Sarge,'" city spokeswoman Sylvia Palmer-Mudrick said. "He was just that kind of guy who loved everyone and everyone loved him."

Police Chief Pat McKinley said even after Deveney retired, he stayed on as a "fixture," keeping in touch with all the retired police officers.

Fullerton was Deveney's town.

He went through the school system, graduating from Fullerton Union High School, Fullerton College, Cal State Fullerton – and then returning to the college campuses to teach criminal justice.

When he was discharged from the Marine Corps, he applied to the police department. Chief Wayne Bornhoft told Deveney to return in a year.

The proud Marine followed orders and launched a career that took him from patrol to administrative positions.

"He was strong-willed, and an incredible patriot," McKinley said.

Deveney told friends that when he retired, he wanted his legacy to be: "Tall guy with white hair, talked a lot and always treated us fairly."

He is survived by his wife, Flo, and daughters Kelly, a dispatcher at FPD, and Kerri, who works at the Anaheim Police Department; two brothers and four sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Loma Vista Memorial Park, 701 E. Bastanchury Road. The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Glenn Deveney Memorial Fund at Fullerton Community Bank, 200 W. Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton, for dispersal to Deveney's favorite charities.

NOTE: Sylvia Palmer-Mudrick is the wife of Randy Mudrick, SHHS '67, who also works for the police department. Randy is also a photographer.

Words cannot express what is in my heart today losing such a wonderful, happy go lucky guy who has brought so much joy & laughter to all of us. Glenn has been part of the Wilkey family for so many years, he was like my own son. Christmas was never the same without Glen & Flo & family. You always had a smile on your face & made so many people your freind. Life was much to short for you, but God works in strange ways. My prayers & heart is with Flo, Kelly & Kerri in this difficult time. Auntie Marge loves you & Peace be with you.

This is a great loss to the whole community of Fullerton especially to the Wilkey Family. We have known Glenn for many years & he has always been a part of our family. We met Glenn when him & Flo started dating, since we were neighbors of Flo's family. He has always been a joy to be around & made every moment a happy one. We always loved listening to all his stories. I will miss him so much. My heart goes out to Flo, Kelly & Kerri. I love you Glenn.

GLENN AND I RAN AROUND FOR A FEW YEARS. HE KNEW MY BROTHER AND SOME MUTUAL FRIENDS. HE WAS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST GUYS I KNEW. HE WAS A GREAT PERSON. YOU KNEW HE ALWAYS HAD YOUR BACK COVERED IN ANY SITUATION.

I AM VERY SADDENED TO HEAR OF HIS DEATH.

I went to Valencia Park when we moved to Fullerton and Flo (Devany) was one of the girls I really admired and trusted. She was neighbors with Nancy (Wilkey) Robertson and was really cool.
Glenn was an exceptional individual with a heart of gold and the pair of them were the best.
Although I don't live in Fullerton anymore they were definitely a part of my 'Fullerton family' and he will be missed.
My sympathies to Flo and his children.

The loss of Glenn is a shock and I feel awful. He was one of the big kids in our neighborhood -- the biggest kid, at 6'5" or so -- when we were little guys. When my house on South Basque was burglarized in about '62, Glenn came to make the report and reassure my mom. He was a big, handsome dude with a great sense of humor and the gift of gab. Everyone liked Glenn. In recent years, Chuck Estes said he'd heard Glenn sang at one time with a famous doo wop group. True, Steve Noonan? I suspect it was one of Glenn's gags. Our hometown has lost a great friend, everybody.

God bless the entire Deveney family. The City of Fullerton is as fortunate to have all of you living there as it was to have Glenn's presence in the police department all those years. He was a one of a kind guy who made gatherings better by his presence. I loved the stories I used to hear about him and the other officers during the social get-togethers. Although I cannot be at the funeral, my thoughts will be with all of you throughout that day and the days to come.

Glenn was our neighbor for 8 years. Every time I would see him, he would always say, "be safe" or "be careful" as he said goodbye. He and Flo are all you can ask for in neighbors, and we will all miss him very much. Dan, Tiffany and Krista.

To Flo and family. I read this morning that Glenn had passed away. He and I were closely involved with the California Check Investigators Association in the late 1970's. He was very involved and motivated, and as you know, always had an idea, opinion and was never afraid to express himself. He was a credit to Law Enforcement and the CCIA.

I’m deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sgt. Glenn Deveney. I will always hold onto the memories I have of Sgt. Deveney when I was a Police Officer Recruit at the Fullerton College Police Academy.
Sgt. Deveney was an amazing instructor and man to me. I loved his sense of humor and old school approach to life’s obstacles.

Thank you Sgt. Deveney for helping me become a stronger person and teaching me a little bit more about myself. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I will always remember Glen's cheerful, funny presence in the room. His hillarious stories that brought us to tears from laughter. He was a man with a big heart, loved by all who had the priviledge to know him. I know he is smiling upon all of us and is resting peacefully knowing he left behind a family bonded with love.
