Randy Wayne McVay
June 10, 1950 - February 25, 2012
Randy Wayne McVay, 61, of Burlington, surrounded by family, died peacefully and entered heaven at 4:55 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, after a long, courageous battle with Juvenile Diabetes.
Born June 10, 1950 in Burlington, he was the son of Lloyd Carson McVay and Alice Lutherene Morrison McVay. Randy was a 1968 graduate of Burlington High School, a 1972 graduate of Northeast Missouri State College with a major in Education, and a 1980 graduate of Western Illinois University with a Master's in Education Administration.
Randy taught from 1975 to 2000 in the Burlington Community School District at Salter School and North Hill School; he coached Horace Mann and James Madison Middle School football, track, volleyball and basketball throughout the years, along with little league baseball. He officiated football, basketball, volleyball and softball in Iowa and Illinois.
He was previously married to Susan Pfaff McVay Dickey on June 4, 1972 in Burlington. His friendship and companionship with Sue Carper began in 1992 and has continued from that time. Randy was a member of St. John and Paul Catholic Church, Iowa High School Athletic Association, Illinois High School Athletic Association, and Des Moines County Retired School Personnel Association. He was an avid reader, enjoyed his pets, watching sports, eating breakfast at Hy-Vee, and spending time with friends and family. Randy was a diehard and hopeful fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs, where he'll watch them win it all from heaven.
Survivors include his companion; Sue Carper of Burlington; two sons, Jonathan (Audra) McVay of Quincy, IL and Matthew (Anika) McVay of Burlington; one brother, Phillip (Mary) McVay of Cedar Rapids; three beloved grandchildren, Ethan Garon Randall McVay of Quincy, IL, Hayden Pfaff and Kinnick Randy James McVay of Burlington; along with an extended grandfather to the Carper family. Survivors also include numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Bondena McVay Von Est.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. McVay will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1st at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The Rev. Anthony J. Herold will be the celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call from noon until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 29th in Lunning Chapel. A Christian Wake will be held at 4:00 p.m. with the family to receive friends following the Christian Wake until 8:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established for Randy's grandchildren's education.
