Another source says that Steve was born in Burlington, Iowa, and his family came to California when he was 12 years old.

Steve was in my Latin classes taught by Mrs. Evelyn Root, along with Marsha Hebden, ’66; Ron Jackson, ’67; Dennis Napoli, Frank Robinson and others. He was a very tall, thin boy then, an excellent student, speaker and debater. He had a playful nature and would occasionally disagree with Mrs. Root on some point or another, in a humorous way.  I believe he became a public speaker in his career.
