Great article, in the early years Hank Vallekamp was instrumental in the formation of this dynasty with his starting the AAU swimming program which filtered some of these water polo players in. With his twice a day cross training ,weights, running , and swimming workouts, it put us on the cutting edge of being in shape at a extreme level. He also educated us on the value of vitamins, and what we should be taking, to maintain our bodies at premium levels.

Thanks so much for adding much detail to my 1st attempts @ giving thanks to the early swimming & water polo of Jimmy Smith & his proteges & successors. I fondly remember Stan Sprague as one of my instructors/coaches. Seem like it is more than likely that Jim Sprague would be Stan's Son? Also Fondly remember Bob Horn & Monte Nitzkowsky as teachers & coachs

I think you left out one very interesting fact regarding SHHS water polo... what was the first SHHS WP team to ever go to the CIF Championships? ... if I remember correctly you were on that team!

Hope all is well,

Monte Nitzkowski and Bob Horn coached Jimmy Smith's Swim Club age group team to the 1958 O.C. Championships and took us to the Junior Olympics in Long Beach (long course). The bonus was that Monte's father owned and operated Vic's Hamburger Stand near the pier in Huntington Beach. Best year of my life.
